As indicated in today’s entry, the Khumra people have not experienced “quiet” waters. In fact, these people have lost everything due to the raging waters. Though physical safety is never guaranteed for those who follow Christ, spiritual safety can be guaranteed to those who follow His narrow path.
Pray for God to mercifully bring the Khumra people to quiet waters and a right path, the one that leads to their Savior.
Mumtaz still hears his water buffalo bellowing as they tumbled away in the flood. Now a year later, he sees few things above the ground where his home once stood. His wife and children has escaped to higher ground, while Mumtaz stays near their home to guard against intruders. Even the council that organizes his Khumra clan is dispersed. Historically their people made and peddled millstones in present-day northern India and Pakistan.
With mechanization, this trade gave way to farming. Now he looks at the mud covering his small plot of land. “It will take years before the government takes any steps to restore the fertility of our land,” he sighs. That is time he does not have. Like the rest of his Khumra people, he is a subsistence farmer. The floods washed away not only their water buffalo, but also their seed for the next crop. He has heard of foreigners who brought help to some Pakistanis, but he has not seen them.
The Khumra people are all Sunni Muslims. They organize their lives around the Islamic prayer schedule. Each time we hear of natural disasters in Pakistan, let us remember to pray for believers who will be bringing aid to the stricken people. Mumtaz still waits.
Pray that followers of Christ will reach the Khumra people with whatever is needed to provide for their physical and spiritual needs. Pray that the Khumra people will recognize the genuine love shown by Jesus’ followers.
