Here in Genesis chapter four we find an interesting contrast between two groups of people. The first are descendents from Cain, and they are identified by their careers, by what they are able to do. In this group are musicians, herders, metal smiths, and builders of cities. But the second group’s identity is found in their relationship with the Lord. Today is no different. Most people, when asked to say something about themselves, identify themselves by what they do. But a few choose to identify themselves by the God they know. And ultimately that’s what really matters.
Pray that the Sayyid people will soon identify themselves first and foremost with Christ.
Ayub is a Sayyid Muslim and editor of a Muslim newspaper in the region of Rampur, Nepal. While talking with another Muslim writer from India, he gave some enlightening facts about the Sayyid Muslims in Nepal.
“The Muslim community in Rampur is well to do. A good percentage of our people are successful in businesses. More than 80 percent of our youths choose to obtain foreign employment, especially in the Persian Gulf countries. Almost none of our people work for the Nepali government except for a few that are health workers or teachers. Sayyid families are faithful to their Sunni Islamic faith. We have a successful madrasa (Islamic school), and have several mosques. Muslims in our community believe in themselves, and they help one another. When our young people take jobs in other countries, they send back a portion of their earnings to help families and other less fortunate Nepalese Muslims. We have attracted some Hindu Nepalese who have converted to Islam.” Sayyids claim they are descendents of Mohammad which allows them to be one of the most honored groups in Muslim society. They commonly take prominent positions in the spiritual leadership of their Muslim communities. There are an estimated 62,000 Sayyid Muslims in Nepal.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God will prepare believers to reach the Sayyids so they will know God and Jesus as revealed in the Word. Pray that Sayyids will teach their people about Christ, so that He can free them from the bondage of sin.
