Language has had an important role in God’s redemption ever since the Tower of Babel incident. By the time of Genesis 11, it was clear that mankind was not going to seek and find the Lord. So He created different languages in order that mankind would not be unified in his rebellion against the Creator.
Pray for frontier missionaries who are trying to master difficult languages with the hope of extending God’s Kingdom to nations that are currently separated from Him.
In India French soon became known as the “seven-tongued clergyman” because he was able to learn several languages at one time. He advised new missionaries to learn four languages at once! It was his own pattern for study. He yearned to bring pupils from the Muslim and Hindu upper classes to Christ, so he agreed to teach at St. John’s College, a mission-related school. At heart, however, he was a pioneer evangelist and fretted over the lack of converts among his students. Being a man of action as well as a visionary, he suggested that missionaries who had worked for several years in educational institutions and had mastered the local language be sent out to pave the way for fresh missionaries.
Once when Thomas French was walking alone through the woods in India, a tailor ran up to him, saying, “Oh, sir, I know who you are; you are the Lord’s servant.” He told French about an Indian preacher he had seen give a tract to another man, and how dismayed he had been when the man tore it up. “But I pieced it together,” he continued, “and learned how to read it. I told my friends about what it said, and now many of us believe in Jesus.” French was profoundly moved by this story and accompanied the tailor to his home. That group of believers became the nucleus for a church.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for today’s missionaries to understand what the Lord is doing among those around them.
