After the gospel has been preached in a people group, and many have responded in faith, a new church is born. We may be tempted to heave a sigh of relief, rejoice in the new evidence of God’s power, and turn our attention elsewhere. But we must remember that some of Satan’s strongest attacks will be directed against this fledgling body of believers. Today’s entry gives an example of what could be the tragic results.
Pray for the brand-new churches being formed among Miao groups. Pray for God’s protection for new believers, and especially for pastors and missionaries who try to turn them to the narrow path.
The history of the Ge Miao people of China is actually two love stories woven together; one, probably legend, and the other, true. Will this story have a sad ending? According to legend, a high-ranking Han Chinese officer and a beautiful Miao girl fell hopelessly in love and planned to marry. The scandal caused the high-ranking official to lose his rank. These star-crossed lovers ran away and got married anyway, and their descendants are said to be the Ge Miao of today. Today the Ge Miao women wear clothing similar to a general’s uniform, commemorating this love story.
Missionary M. H. Hutton fell in love with the Ge people and learned their colorful six-tone language, which he committed to writing in 1933. He found them to be polytheists, and they also practiced ancestral worship. In 1935, he wrote, “The best, and cheering news of all to us is one of these new baptized believers is a Keh Deo [Ge] tribesman. It reminds me of the nine years of prayer and work to get an entrance into that tribe and the one soul that received Christ. Now there are [a total of] six men that have received Christ, and I hear their wives and families are interested in the gospel too.”
How does this story end? Tragically, the Christians ceased to believe when the missionaries were expelled from China. As one observer put it, “They believed in the missionaries and not in Jesus.” Today, there are only 100 known Ge who follow Christ.
