2 Corinthians 4:4
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

For thousands of years peoples like the Tampuans have looked to spirits that are in rebellion against the Creator. If they would but stop and think, they would realize that the only spirit worthy of their devotion is the One who created them and all they see around them. But they cannot think clearly on such matters until the Holy Spirit intervenes.

Pray for the Holy Spirit to intervene in the spiritual lives of the Tampuan people so that they can see the light of the gospel.

Tampuan People

“We will need to see Lom if this keeps up,” Maly told her brother as she watched the torrential rain. Her brother nodded, then went back to playing his flute. He stopped in the middle of his song when thunder echoed outside the hut. He abruptly stood up and said, “Let’s get Lom to speak to the spirits for us.”

Like most animists, the Tampuan people live in constant fear of the spirit world. They believe spirits inhabit all things and must be appeased through spirit mediums and animal sacrifices. If floods come, they assume the spirits of the sky and rain are angry. In response, they consult a medium who, for a price, beats his or her drum, goes into a trance, and is possessed by the spirits in question. The medium will sacrifice livestock to convince the spirit to stop plaguing them with trouble.

As one old Cambodian saying describes it, “The Chinese chase the Khmer. The Khmer chase the tribal people. The tribal people chase the spirits. And the spirits live in the mountains.” Imagine, thinking that you are being chased by the spirits of the mountains. That is the terrifying situation in which the Tampuan find themselves. Most of them have no hope or future because they have no knowledge of the God that loves them.

Pray for workers to go to the Tampuan and provide them with the good news that they can be set free from the bondage to spirits, forgiven of their sins, and become part of the family of the One who created them.
