John 8:32
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Like other Muslims, Azerbaijanis know that God is truth, and that He rewards those who seek Him. They also understand that Jesus is a great prophet who spoke for God. Yet they do not understand that without knowing Him personally, there is incomplete truth.

Pray that the Azerbaijani in Texas will soon know that Jesus is the truth, and that this truth will set them free from sin’s tyranny.

Muslim Azerbaijanis in Houston

by CN

What do Baku, Azerbaijan, and Houston, Texas, U.S.A. have in common? Baku is a port city on the Caspian Sea. Houston is a port city on the Gulf of Mexico. In both cities petroleum is a major industry. Both cities boast a population of over 2,000,000 people. Though the Azerbaijanis are the majority of the population in Baku, there is a sizable number of them in Houston as well.

Officially established in April 1976, the Houston-Baku Sister City Association (HBSCA) was formed to welcome visitors and delegations from Azerbaijan arriving in Houston. It also assists delegations and visitors from Houston who travel to Baku, Azerbaijan. In Houston, the Azerbaijani introduce their culture, folklore and arts. They showcase public festivals, events and Azerbaijani holidays to Houstonians. Such holidays include Novruz Bayram, the Muslim New Year, and Iftar, the evening meal that breaks the Muslim fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Unlike their Turkic ancestors, the Azerbaijanis are mostly Shi’ite Muslim. Out of nine million people, there are only about 3,000 Azerbaijani followers of Christ, according to Operation World. Few if any of them live in Houston.

Pray that as Houstonians welcome Azerbaijanis to their city, Christ’s followers will greet them with the love of Isa (Jesus in the Qur’an.) Pray that as Houstonians travel to Azerbaijan, Christians will be among the travelers, carrying the good news of God’s love to Baku and throughout Azerbaijan.
