What other “religious” leader could offer such a radical teaching? Jesus really was asking the humanly impossible! God the Father told Moses that there should be an “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,” He was setting limits that would prevent an endless stream of retaliation. Now Jesus was saying to “do good,” “bless” and “pray for” our enemies. Only the Holy Spirit can give us the strength to do these things! And only those who are following Christ have the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the kind of radical obedience that draws the nations to Christ.
Pray for such radical obedience to come to believers among the formerly persecuted peoples of Siberia.
Tatiana succeeded her mother as the shaman for her Udygein clan in far eastern Siberia. She did not want to do this because it requires one to live a difficult, uncomfortable life. But one night in a vision, two spirits came to her. They told her they would use her like they had her recently departed mother. What else could she do?
“The Soviets persecuted my mother terribly,” Tatiana said. “She was a shaman for our people. And the Communists were determined to destroy our religion. We could no longer honor the spirits of the trees or the river or the mountains. Now after decades of the Soviets, it is a great struggle to recapture the old ways.”
Two generations of Udygein people were taught the language and ways of the Russians. Few Udygeins know their traditional ways. Their mother tongue is dying; only the grandparents now speak it. But with the death of the Soviet Union 20 years ago, nothing has replaced their traditions. Slowly, Tatiana and her fellow shamans are teaching Udygein children to worship the spirits in nature.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that Udygeins who are following Christ will continue to find creative ministries to reach their kinsmen. Pray that the Creator of all nature will reveal Himself to them. Pray that the Holy Spirit will overcome the spirits that control Tatiana.
