Luke 5:5
Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.”

Can you relate to what Simon Peter was saying here? I’m sure that many missionaries can. There are times when it really doesn’t seem that the fields are ripe for the harvest, but instead, we are wasting our time. Years may go by before someone working among an unreached people group might see visible fruit from their work. Experienced missionaries tell us that it sometimes takes more than 15 years to plant a church among an unreached people group! Sometimes the Lord is waiting for one more attempt or one more prayer before He begins to pour out His Spirit. Are you willing to let down the nets one more time?

Pray that missionaries among the shamanistic peoples will not grow weary, but will persevere.

Orok People

by WK

The Orok fisherman cast his net into the sea and waited. In the distance he saw the wooded coastline of Russia’s Sakhalin Island, home to all 750 Orok people alive today. The fisherman wished he could work on land, raising reindeer like his grandfather. That was before the Soviet government forced his people group to become fisherman. The Soviets had also forced Orok children to go to distant boarding schools. Many such students married ethnic Russians and never returned to the Orok homeland. Grandpa was one of the few from his generation that did.

The Oroks are a dying people group. Intermarriage has caused their numbers to dwindle. Many of their customs were lost during the Soviet era, when the government forced them to move to new villages on the coast and become fishermen. Since the fall of Communism in 1991, the Oroks had been allowed to return to their homeland, but only a few have chosen to do so. After several generations as fishermen, few remember how to herd reindeer. The Orok language has never been written down. This people group has no Bible. There are almost no followers of Christ among them.

Ask God to lead a mission agency to begin translating the Bible into Orok. Pray that God would open doors. Russian laws often make it difficult for foreign missionaries to reach out to people groups like the Orok. Ask God to open the hearts of this people group to Christ’s message of salvation.
