Daniel 1:1
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

Dr. Ralph Winter has observed that throughout history when the people of God have failed to share the gospel with the peoples around them, He has often brought the peoples to the gospel—sometimes even with great force. Israel’s idolatry and selfish failure to take the good news to their neighbors led to the siege of Jerusalem. Today’s church has failed to take the gospel to all the peoples of the world, and so God has brought the peoples to the church’s shores, most often not as military conquerors but as refugees, students and businessmen. Are we willing to share with them our spiritual and material abundance?

Pray that our Heavenly Father will help us to respond to wonderful opportunities for ministry to newcomers in our own communities.

Shi’ite Muslim Arabs in Iran

by KC

Javier, a Venezuelan news reporter, nibbled on some baklava before asking questions of Ali, a prominent Shi’ite Muslim Arab businessman at his home in Ahvaz, a town in southwestern Iran. “Is it true that you have most of Iran’s vast oil wealth here in Khuzestan Province?” Ali replied enthusiastically, “Yes. We are a very wealthy province, and Iran needs us.” Javier then asked, “Aren’t there Arabs here that want to secede from Iran? I understand there were some protests, and even some killings about five years ago.” Ali replied icily, “That was the work of foreigners. From time to time they send Wahhabi missionaries and mercenaries to help the Sunnis and cause us harm. There are between one and two million Arabs here, but we are devout Shi’ites just like the Persians. We are not traitors to our country. In fact, the Sunni Arabs are traitors to Islam, because they follow leaders who were not in the family line of Mohammed, blessings on him.”

Arabs in Iran? Yes, they are there, but religion is thicker than ethnicity in this part of the world. Most are loyal to Iran, especially after the Iraq-Iran War in the 1980s that threatened their homeland. Almost all of them are devout Shi’ite Muslims who have not heard that Jesus is the One who holds the future.
