The Tamboli people do not remember the Lord, because no one has told them who He is. Instead, they “remember” and thank Shiva, a Hindu god for their wealth.
Pray that God’s Kingdom will be extended into Tamboli communities and that they will put their trust in Christ alone.
“...but remember the Lord your God! It is He who gives you the power to become rich, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors, as it is today.” Deuteronomy 8:18, New Century Version
Betel leaves have put the Tamboli people “on the map” in the minds of their fellow countrymen in India. Tambolis have become successful in preparing and selling them for centuries. Even their name is derived from the Sanskrit word for betel leaf. With their mild stimulant and medicinal effects, the betel leaves are in continual demand, and have been in use for what some archaeologists estimate to be 4,000 years.
Aside from the betel industry, the Tambolis are also very successful in the sale of bicycles, hardware and clothing. The more educated Tambolis are employed in government positions and white-collar occupations.
Every November, the Tamboli people in Ghazipur spend their time in a Shiva temple, praying for prosperity and success in their betel businesses.
The Tamboli people will keep relationships with so-called “clean” castes and visit them on various festivals and special occasions. The upper castes will accept water from the Tambolis, indicating their acceptance of them as having status in the Hindu pecking order.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
