Daily Topic for October 17, 2010
Like many of the peoples of India today, the Kutchis are seeking wealth. This is a new era for India, and there are unprecedented opportunities for economic prosperity. Little do people know how quickly worldly wealth can come and go. But spiritual riches last for eternity!
Pray that the Kutchi people will seek spiritual riches that they can keep for eternity.
“Vijay, come in for lunch,” Sharna called her son. Vijay glanced up from the sand along the shore where he played. It was a beautiful day on the coast of the Gulf of Kutch and the Arabian Sea in India’s western state of Gujarat. Kutch is essentially an island shaped like a tortoise, or “katchua,” thus the name of the people. Vijay knew that the noon meal would be a soggy blend of nutritious lentils and rice, called kitchin. The same meal is served every day at every meal.
Vijay’s father was busy at work doing construction. He is preparing to follow many of the Kutch people and move to outlying cities such as Mumbai in order to find more work in the building trades.
Sharna spends a great deal of time in rituals to appease the many Hindu gods. She worries that Vijay doesn’t take the faith of their people seriously and that he will offend some deity and cause bad things to happen to their family.
Pray for the Kutchi people as they make their way into the cities. Pray that Christ’s followers will penetrate their close-knit community. Pray that they find salvation and peace from the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. Pray that God will call someone specifically to go to the Kutchis during this time of transition.
