As followers of Christ, we know that the only true hope is hope put in Christ. Right now the Paraiyans in Sri Lanka are finally emerging from a time of low status and hopelessness, and perhaps looking to a new day when they will be given greater status, respect and honor. It is very human to settle for putting our hope is such earthly things.
Pray that the Paraiyans community will seek and find true hope in Christ.
Hope is something that is just as necessary for the survival of people groups as the physical necessities of life. The example of the Jewish people during the Holocaust bears witness to this, as does Scripture. “Hope deferred makes the heart grow sick,” Prov. 13:12.
The Paraiyans of Sri Lanka were a people group desperately in need of hope. Their history is one of oppression and slavery, and in recent centuries, many Paraiyans were made servants during the time the British controlled South Asia. The British referred to them as a “depressed class” of people, and to this day many have a low status, with economic and educational opportunities sometimes still denied to them. Yet it appears that this was not always the case. They were once a large and powerful group holding high positions in society with good ancestral properties. Today their status in society is changing and there are now many notable Paraiyan scholars, entertainers and politicians who hold positions of influence. This could lead them to put their hope in themselves.
The Paraiyans could have hope in Jesus! Though in recent history they were subjugated by more powerful people in their country, they are a tribe that must be represented around the throne of God in Revelation 7, as heavenly citizens and children of the Most High God!Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for them to come to experience “Christ in them, the hope of glory” (Col. 1:27).
