2 Timothy 3:15
…and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Have you considered what it might be like for the thousands of people in today’s world like the Dongs who do not know how to read and do not even have excerpts from the Bible in their own language through gospel recordings? They do not have Bible programs to listen to on the radio. Think of the help and comfort you receive daily from God’s Word—to say nothing of the most basic knowledge of new life in Jesus Christ.

Pray today for those who are struggling to make God’s Word clear and understandable to people groups where the knowledge of Christ has not broken through. Pray also that God will provide His Word for those who have never heard it.

Dong People

by JWS

About 600 years ago, the founding fathers of Zhanli village agreed to control the population, and voluntarily limit each family to one boy and one girl. They knew that within their village, more children meant less land per person, so population control was their answer to this problem. To practice contraception, they use herbs, folk medicine, astrology, and when necessary, infanticide until they achieved their goal.

Today the Dong people who live in this village do not have an alphabet or a written language. Imagine life without the printed word. You would not have a book or newspaper in your home. No libraries, no computers and no Internet, email, or texting. What if you had to gain every bit of knowledge, including contraception methods, from other people?

This is how the 758 Dong people of Zhanli village live today. They have no written record of anything that ever happened. No record of their history, except in songs and tales. The Dong people love to sing. The village contains a drum tower, where young Dong couples sing love songs to each other.

The Dong people believe in many gods, but they are considered relatively open to the gospel. With no missionaries, no Bible and no Christian broadcasting, they are likely to spend eternity separated from their creator God. “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” (Romans 10:14b)
