This could be the best possible news for the Mashan Miao peoples, all of whom fear the afterlife, and understand that all is not well here on earth. God offers them an abundant life here on earth, and a delightful new order in the life to come. Would any of them say no to that, given what we have read today?
Pray that soon there will be many workers among the Mashan Miao peoples. Pray that the Holy Spirit will give them the gift of faith so they can believe and experience His goodness and mercy.
Sheng, a 10-year-old boy, is hearing about the afterlife from his father. “Grandfather has gone to the outer darkness, the place of all spirits. Demons will torture him. Long ago, our ancestors placed a bamboo branch atop this mountain. It is a signal to all the gods that things are not well here on earth.” Sheng’s grandfather died yesterday, so his extended family is burying their patriarch this morning. Tradition leads them to a summit for the burial service.
In spite of the government’s ban on additional children, Sheng’s family has three children and hope for more. As part of the Mashan Miao people, they continue having additional children. It is unclear whether this happens with official permission or if the authorities don’t know because the Mashan Miaos live in an isolated area. What is clear is that they are one of the few ethnic groups whose numbers are rising, from 10,000 in 1995 to a projected 16,600 this year.
The Mashan Miaos live in isolation. They are so cut off that even before the Communist era, missionaries neglected them. They have no Scriptures or other resources in their language.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for these materials to reach this isolated people. Pray that the Holy Spirit will prepare the way for the gospel. Pray that the explosion of faith in Christ in China will reach the Mashan Miaos and their neighbors. Pray that reached people with a similar language will sense God’s call to reach the Mashan peoples.
