Peter had asserted as much, but Jesus proceeded to predict that Peter would deny Him not just once but three times! How often do we make bold statements without first “counting the cost” of being Jesus’ disciple? The one who aspires to such an honorable calling must, as Jesus said, “deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). Is such a cost too great for us to pay? It may very well mean the crucifixion of our life’s ambitions, but the rewards are so much greater!
Pray that the Father will make us bold in our determination to follow Him. Pray that He will teach us first to “count the cost.”
“Once you make your way into Tusheti you come upon stone shrines known as khatis, sometimes decked with the horns of sacrificed goats or sheep. Sometimes they include a bell. Women are not permitted to approach these shrines. Please don’t think this is silly. This is a very important aspect of the Tushetian culture and insulting to the Tush if women choose to disregard their custom.”
Melissa from England was explaining the culture of the Bat people to female travelers preparing to visit their area in Georgia. “On festival days they sacrifice a ram and cast its blood over the shrine. This is followed with ritual prayers. They will tell you that it is important for them to fuse their old and new “Christian” ways in worship.”
There are about 3,400 Bat speaking people who live in the untamed, beautiful Caucasus Mountains of Tushetia, northeast Georgia. Their main village is Zemo-Alvani. This small group is related by language to the Chechens and the Ingush peoples. Sheep and cattle herding are their main livelihood. They produce fabulous salty cheeses, including the famous Gouda. The thick wool of their sheep is in high demand in Europe. Most are culturally Georgian Orthodox Christians who combine old pagan traditions with those of the Orthodox Church. There are very few Bible-believing Bat churches.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God will provide people to give stronger teaching of His Word to the Bat people. Pray that they will have spiritual revival and become powerful witnesses to others who border their land.
