Malachi 2:15b
In flesh and spirit they are His. And why one? Because He was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

This verse describes why God hates divorce (v. 16). Parents are to stay faithful to one another as a symbol of faithfulness to the One True God. Such faithfulness sets a good example for children. Divorce, on the other hand, interferes with God’s goal to see children raised in a way that will draw them to God by offering an example of faithlessness.

Pray for Kanuri children, most of whom live in homes where there has been at least one or more divorces. Pray for Kanuri parents to repent of their unfaithfulness to each other and the One True God, and turn to Him.

Kanuri People of Niger and Nigeria

by CL

The Kanuri people of Nigeria and Niger have been literally scarred by folk Islam. During a naming ceremony held when babies are just eight days old, their faces are purposefully scarred as religious leaders read from the Qu’ran. The result is a mark that reminds them for the rest of their lives of their identity.

While some Kanuris are farmers and others work in the cities at various modern occupations, they have two things in common: their Islamic heritage and their marital difficulties. Many Kanuris are polygamous, collecting as many as four wives. As a result of this practice, the divorce rate is about 80 percent. One can only imagine how this affects Kanuri children. Although families are considered very important, they are often fragmented, and the children suffer even more than the adults.

In addition to following the teaching of Mohammad, the Kanuris engage in various superstitious behaviors for good luck and to keep evil spirits at bay. They use charms and amulets to ensure a healthy pregnancy and a safe delivery.

Invite the Holy Spirit to bring a godly sorrow that will lead the Kanuri people to turn away from folk Islam and toward the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Pray for their children to be kept safe by the one true and living God. Ask the Lord to put His mark on the Kanuris and make them a people set apart for His service.
