Numbers 6:24
"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace."

We all remember this blessing, don’t we? It’s a standard blessing, uttered by Jews and Christians alike. The context is a priestly blessing on the children of Israel, but it could also be a prayer uttered by the “priestly” Shaikhs in Bangladesh for the unreached peoples of their country. But first, they themselves must be convinced of the need for the blessing of Christ.

Pray for a spiritual movement among the Shaikhs in Bangladesh that will lead them to be blessed, and to bless others, resulting in His face shining upon them.

Shaikhs of Bangladesh

The conversion to Islam in what is now Bangladesh began in the 13th century and continued for hundreds of years. As is the case in many contexts outside the Western world, the conversion of these people groups was collective rather than individual. It took the work of influential and spiritually persuasive people to move this many people in one spiritual direction.

The Shaikhs are considered by Muslims in Bangladesh to be spiritually developed enough to help others in their spiritual development. They are the teachers of Islam, influential leaders in the eyes of their people. Some Muslims consider them to be saints. Much like the Sayyids we prayed for yesterday, the decision to follow Christ among the Shaikhs would bear widespread fruit due to their incredible influence and spiritual authority. Their position of spiritual governance is so widespread that in some villages the shrines of dead Shaikhs can outnumber mosques.

There is a tension in Muslim traditions, especially among the mystics, between the mercy of God and the fear of God. The Jesus presented in the New Testament account reconciles that tension by presenting an eternal God of mercy who poured His wrath on Jesus, the perfect Son of God and Son of Man, thus freeing us from the consequences of our sin and the weight of God’s wrath by believing on Him.
