Genesis 14:18-19
"Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High and he blessed Abram, 'Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.'"

Abraham’s relationship with Melchizedek, a Canaanite King who worshipped the Creator God, has important missiological significance. Spiritually speaking, the Bible says Melchizedek, which means “king of righteousness,” was the founder of a priestly order which pattern both David and Jesus followed in. Though the Canaanites were beginning to turn to an idolatrous worship of the sun and moon, Melchizedek chose to stand against this and identify himself with the Creator. Abraham recognized that they were on the same team, and thus made the important decision to ally himself with this king-priest.

Pray that frontier missionaries might have the discernment to identify and build on the redemptive work God is already doing among all the peoples, including the Madaris.

Madari People

As Orissa’s state assembly gathered, so did Ali and several of his Madari kinsmen. In front of the assembly building, they set loose scores of cobras as a protest against a new government ban on public shows of their animals.

Ali’s ancestors have charmed snakes for generations. Among his Madari people, this is a proud profession. They do not harm the snakes; they leave the fangs and the venom untouched. Traditionally they have made the snakes dance to entertain passers-by. The audience gives a few rupees which helped support Ali’s family. Others from the Madari group also have animals-bears, monkeys and parrots-with which they entertain.

But now animal rights activists have stepped in. “In this continuous process,” claims one group (pfaorissa.org), “many rare snakes are going extinct.” The Orissa state government, concerned with modernizing its image, seeks to ban the Madari’s trade of performing animals. Ali’s people have no other marketable skills. They feel trapped in a cage.

The Madaris are exclusively Muslim, and they primarily speak Urdu. Many forms of media are available to bring the gospel to them: videos, audio recordings, radio, and printed matter.

Pray that this conflict will prod the Madaris to seek the true God. Pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal the Lord Jesus to the leaders of this Muslim group.-EF
