Have you ever stopped to think about the cost of that free gift of the water of life? It cost nothing for us, but everything for our Lord. That is the real difference between what we believe and all other faiths. The water of life is free to every repentant sinner who will bow the knee to Jesus. How the unreached Hindus need to know this! But, before their hearts will open to this gospel, we must pray. As we begin to pray next month, why not recruit someone to join the army of pray-ers for Orissa?
Pray that the Father will help us to be faithful next month as we pray for the peoples of Orissa who need to depend on Him for the water of life.
Although Brahmins are usually viewed as a priestly caste, the Bhumihar Brahmins abandoned the priesthood for land ownership sometime prior to 1500. As a consequence, their caste identity came through military service in exchange for land. Some own large plantations worked by Dalits. Some earn a living in politics or commerce. There are those who don’t consider them to be orthodox in their practices.
Bhumihar Brahmins are a widespread people. They live in a number of Indian states, especially Bihar where they are politically important. They also live on Mauritius, an African island in the Indian Ocean; as well as in Suriname, Trinidad, Tobago, and Guyana in the Americas. As a consequence, they speak a number of languages. Their exact numbers are uncertain.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that missiologists will learn more about them and their numbers and which groups are most open to the gospel. Pray that missionaries will seek to plant churches among these people in India and elsewhere. Pray that Bhumihars who hold power will use it on behalf of the poor and exploited regardless of caste. Pray that God’s Spirit will awaken in them a desire to know and serve Jesus.-TP
