The lamp stands represent churches that are established by Christ to bear the light of the gospel. Sadly, the lamp stand Christ was referring to, the church in Ephesus, is now gone. The church was not strong enough to stand up to the dark spiritual climate. Likewise, there are fellowships in Varanasi, but they have to regularly endure the oppressive darkness around them.
Pray that Christian work in Varanasi, and the prayers of the saints will help keep the fellowships alive in that Hindu holy city by the Ganges.
“This year we had the third Aradhna (worship) Yatra (pilgrimage) from Allahabad to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.” Sangeeta, one of the leaders of YWAM in Varanasi, was writing an encouraging report to a missionary friend. “We had 150 people from different groups and churches, some on the highway, on the river and in two cities, all united in prayer to win Varanasi for the Lord. Plus we had thousands of believers join us in this virtual prayer journey through the web. We prayed at key strategic places in the city, which included the Varuna Sangam (where the river Varuna joins the river Ganges), Dashwamedh (where thousands of Hindus come to worship and bathe) and Sarnath (the Buddhist high place). At one of the mainline churches, we had a special time of prayer to repent on behalf of the church’s attitude towards women over the last 150 years. The men, including the pastors, stood up and asked for God’s forgiveness. Now that it is over, it is important to keep praying for the city of Varanasi.”
Varanasi, a Hindu pilgrimage site, has often been looked upon as a place from which revival can come to northern India and beyond. In the past, the churches and Christian workers of the area have been challenged with discouragement, internal struggles, and a lack of spiritual strength.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for God to purify and strengthen His Church in such a way that it will be a powerful force to set the captives free. Pray that the prayer efforts will bring those in Varanasi into His kingdom.-PD
