How the Shepherd’s heart aches when He sees the sheep deprived of what they need! How it aches to comfort the worried and help the helpless! Has your heart begun to ache like that? What would your life be like without the Shepherd? Have you envisioned the plight of two billion people who so far have little chance of knowing Him? Does your heart ache when you realize the extent of their needs?
Pray with the compassion of the Lord for the nations!
These people live in tightly packed villages high on mountain ridges in western Dagestan, a region of southwestern Russia, bordering Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea. The Qwannab Andi people number about 10,000. The boundaries around their villages are clearly marked and respected. Each village is divided into quarters, with a central square and a mosque used for religious purposes every Friday. With the growing popularity of Islam in the Russian Federation, it is also growing among the Andi. Many Andis have farms where they raise livestock, but about half of them have immigrated to Dagestan’s lowlands where they have taken work on community farms or in factories. Their clothing is typically European style. However the woman’s costume adds the embroidered headdress in the form of a half-moon, with the ends pointing downward. Popular in earlier times, these are now worn only for ceremonial occasions.
Prior to their conversion to Islam, the Andis regularly visited a culture center on the peak of one of the mountains. Even today the spiritual life of the Andi people includes various elements of superstition. They have neither the Bible nor the JESUS Film in their language, which is divided into seven dialects.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Ask the Lord to call believers who are willing to live and work among the Andis, taking authority over the spiritual forces that have kept the Andis bound for generations. Pray that the JESUS Film, gospel recordings and other evangelistic materials will be available soon.-MH
