The open door is a familiar figure in New Testament writing. It pictures unhindered opportunity for the proclamation of the gospel. Today we often view opportunity in terms of “availability of visas” and absence of official opposition to the gospel. By contrast, generations of missionaries have seen open doors as “people groups without the gospel message” and “messengers willing to risk persecution and even death” to take the Word to them. They saw opportunity in terms of the power available to them through the Holy Spirit, who would guide them in ministry.
Dear God, give us eyes that will focus on the tremendous possibilities for sharing the good news of Christ’s love with the world’s peoples. We commit the “impossibilities” to You.
“We have made plans to build 50 new resorts over the next four years in the Maldive Islands. The number of flight connections to our islands will soon be doubling. Ali, you really should consider buying into some of these resorts. I have, and I know I will make a lot of money.” The Maldivian businessman was proud of the success he and others were having in the resort business, and he was telling his friend.
There are almost 250,000 people who live on 200 islands that are part of a chain of 1,200 islands that make up the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India. Almost all Maldivians are Sunni Muslim. The country’s constitution states “that all residents must be Muslim.” No evangelism or Bible distribution is allowed. If anyone is caught participating in these activities they are immediately told to leave the islands.
In spite of the importance of foreign tourism to the Maldivian economy, the government is keeping tourists and citizens separate. Many Maldivians are not permitted to work at resorts because the resorts serve alcohol and the dress of foreigners is unacceptable to Muslims.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God will open a way for the Maldivians to know Him and His word through believers visiting their islands as tourists or business related people. Pray that the government will lift their restrictions on those who follow Christ. Pray that Maldivian believers will be salt and light to their Muslim neighbors.-PD
