This verse follows the long description of those who by faith conquered and of those who by faith endured. All were faithful witnesses in their day, and all watch to see if we also will be faithful witnesses. About 10,000 people groups without a church still wait for us to take the Great Commission to them. Yet how easy to become encumbered with cares and pleasures and riches-things which can slow our race to a crawl.
Dear Lord, teach us to “throw off” the hindrances. We want to run!
“Send me ten thousand rupees or you’ll never see your brother again. This is your final warning. Deliver the money in a suitcase to the drop point by midnight, or your brother dies.” The anonymous caller quickly hung up before the call could be traced to its location.
The middle-aged man wasn’t surprised by the call. He belongs to the wealthy Marwadi people group, and kidnapping threats are common among them. This wasn’t the first time a family member had been threatened and he sensed it wouldn’t be the last time.
In India the Marwadis have a history of being daring businessmen. After they become wealthy, they keep the money within their families, passing it on from father to son. They have become a target for kidnapping by anyone who is jealous of their wealth. Multi-generational business rivalries are common among the Marwadi families, so sometimes Marwadis kidnap members of rival families out of spite. Just as these affluent people need to be saved from the clutches of kidnappers, they also need to be saved from the clutches of Satan, the one who wants to destroy them for eternity.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God would break the hold Hinduism and materialism have on the Marwadi people of India. May this people group learn to find physical and spiritual safety in Jesus Christ. May the Lord open the door for Christian businessmen to reach out to this people group.-WK
