Daily Topic for July 23, 2008
Have you considered what it might be like for the thousands of peoples in today’s world who do not have the Bible in their own languages? Think of the help and comfort you receive daily from God’s Word-to say nothing of the most basic knowledge of new life in Jesus Christ. Pray today for those who are struggling to make God’s Word clear and understandable in people groups where the knowledge of Christ has not broken through.
Pray that God will provide His Word for those who have never heard by using you in praying, giving, sending, or going!
“The Seaweed Aria, from the Huayao (pronounced Hwa-yaow) people, is one of the most beautiful yet complicated folk songs that is presented in our ‘Dynamic Yunnan’ gala here in Beijing. The beautiful dresses worn by our Huayao dancers were ones that they or a member of their tribe embroidered themselves. The girls of this tribe learn embroidery and needlework from the age of 11 or 12.” Yang, conductor and leading performer of the famous show, was giving an interview to a reporter from China’s “Daily News.”
Proud of their cultural identity, the 84,000 Huayao Tai people of Yunnan Province desire to be known separately from the larger Dai people group cluster to which they belong. Although many wish to adopt the modern dress and ways of this century, they still cling to their own customs.
Large circular hats and the distinctive embroidered dresses worn by the women always identify them (see picture).
Huayao Tais maintain an active practice of Theravada Buddhism combined with many traditional forms of animistic rituals. This is clearly seen in their multiple religious folk songs and dances. They are also actively involved in forms of spiritism and black magic. Christian evangelists have presented the gospel to them, resulting in several house churches. Gospel tapes and portions of the New Testament are being circulated among various villages.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that Huayao Tai people will receive and accept what God has so longed to give to them, His gifts of salvation and love. Pray for continuous growth and protection for the new house churches.-PD
