1 Thessalonians 1:5
"...our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit, and with deep conviction."

The goal of world evangelization will never be achieved by the brilliance of human strategy, the wisdom of cultural adaptation, or the power and effort of human determination, although each of these elements has its place. Only God’s Spirit, moving and working in the hearts of each people group, will accomplish their evangelization. Yet He uses the available human resources that are yielded to His control.

Pray that every member of each missionary team (Western or two-thirds World) will be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance in each situation as they seek to bear witness to Jesus Christ.

Lati People of China

William Cassels was born in 1858 in Portugal, the ninth of 13 children born to John and Ethelinda Cassels. They were English citizens whose work had brought them to Portugal. When William was only 10 years old, his father suddenly became very ill and weak. As he struggled to recover, the family returned to England, where he died a year later.

At the age of 15, while attending school in England, William discovered athletics, and distinguished himself by winning cricket and football “colors.” He also learned how to swim.

When he left school, he already knew the focus of his vocation. From early years he had been conscious of God’s call. He had learned the Scriptures as a child and knew them well, and when he was 12 or 13 confessed to an older brother that he had made up his mind to be a clergyman. He intended to go as a missionary with the Church Missionary Society, but when he expressed a strong desire for work in inland China, he was told that they were not prepared to start work in the interior. Therefore, he approached the China Inland Mission (CIM), and became a member of the famous “Cambridge Seven” which left for China in 1885.

In March of that year, the “Cambridge Seven” reached Shanghai and were welcomed by Hudson Taylor, CIM’s founder. The first 18 months in China were spent in language study.
