What a vision for the world Zechariah had! He was certainly faithful to his calling, exhorting the people to press on to rebuild the temple. Yet his understanding of God’s purpose was much greater-it was for all the nations! He said, “Many nations will join themselves to the Lord…and will become My people” (2:11). “A mongrel race…will be a remnant for our God” (9:6, 7). What better way to be faithful to the Lord and His Church than to be involved with His plans for reaching the nations?

The Vai people of Liberia traditionally have organized their society on a system of power passed through the male lineage and based on territorial occupation. Each clan holds claim to a certain amount of territory. The first clan to arrive and settle in a particular area assumes leadership over the Vai people who arrive later. They control the social, political and economic status of the inhabitants of that territory. At the other extreme, the lower class people are basically slaves; debt bondsmen and chattel slaves. Chattel slaves are considered the lowest strata of Vai society, and they must perform the most menial tasks.
Greedy for foreign aid, the Vai people have gladly accepted money and materials from Arabic countries to build mosques throughout their territory. The Vai people who are members of any organized religion are Muslim. Estimates of the number of Vai who adhere to Islam vary widely. Most of them also practice traditional religion. They believe that a supreme god created everything, but that he cannot be approached directly. In 2003, the New Testament was completed in the Vai syllabic script.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that the Word of God will not return void and that many Vai people will read the Bible and receive the Savior who longs for them to love Him as His children. Pray that the Vai New Testament will be broadcast on the radio for those who cannot read.-JWS
