1 Sam. 12:22
"The Lord will not abandon His people on account of His great Name, because the Lord has been pleased to make you a people for Himself."

In his valedictory address Samuel reminds Israel of God’s covenant promise to make them His own people. That promise was decisively stated in Exodus 19:5, 6: “Now if you obey Me fully and keep My covenant, then out of all nations you will be My treasured possession. Although the whole earth is Mine, you will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” Unfortunately, Israel, both before and after Samuel’s ministry, repeatedly forgot that they were a people with a purpose.

Thank You Lord, for making us part of Your people. We yield ourselves to Your purposes for the nations.

Gypsies of Uzbekistan

The European tourist smiled as she placed a coin in the tousle-haired girls hand. Immediately a crowd of other children, men and women pressed forward, hands extended, pushing and shouting for the tourist’s attention and for her money. Startled, she and the other tourists quickly boarded the bus and took off without viewing the ancient monument they’d hoped to see.

In the days when the Soviets were in charge, the Gypsies were made to go to school, work in factories, and cultivate small plots of land. Their status improved and their nomadic, vagrant lifestyle changed. But now, with Uzbekistan’s independence, and without the financial backing and structure they were once molded into, the Gypsies (also called “Luri” there) are returning to begging to survive. Today there is little work, especially for Gypsies.

The Gypsies in Uzbekistan are marginally Muslim, and very few would embrace Jesus. Few have had the chance to hear of salvation in Christ.
