2 Pet. 3:11-12
"You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming"

Have you ever reflected on this mysterious admonition? What does Peter mean when he says we should speed (or hasten) that day? Is Peter possibly referring to Jesus’ statement that “this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations” before the end will come (Matthew 24:14)? If so, then consider the glorious possibility: by committing our lives to bringing the gospel to those people groups still without a believing fellowship in their midst, we are helping to speed the return of Jesus Christ.

Dear Lord, “Thy kingdom come.” Give strength to our hands as we seek to hasten the day of Your appearing.

Walung People of Nepal and India

Mules and yaks carry heavy loads of grain, cotton and sugar to Tibet from India as the caravan creeps along the dusty road. On the return trip, the animals bear burdens of wool, woolen carpets and Tibetan salt. The trade route passes through northeastern Nepal, an area populated by 10 or 12 villages of Walung people. Over the centuries, the Walungs have become wealthy, acting as middlemen along the trade route. They provide food, water and lodging for the caravans, in exchange for goods which the Walungs then sell to neighboring tribes for a higher price.

Fast forward to the 21st century: on a new modern road, motor vehicles whiz past the Walung villages without stopping. “Progress” has robbed these people of their only means of livelihood. They never learned to raise crops or breed livestock. Today most of the Walungs exist on government aid. Their traditional way of life no longer exists.

Tibetan Buddhism is the religion of almost all of the Walung people. Neither Scriptures, gospel cassette recordings nor the JESUS Film exist in their language. Few have ever been exposed to the gospel.

Pray for godly workers to settle in their villages, and teach them skills to free them from dependence on government aid. Pray that they would come to depend on the one true God. Pray that they will soon give their allegiance and gratitude to Jesus.-JWS
