What a beautiful paradox: “make every effort to enter that rest.” This verse simply summarizes the biblical balance between resting in God’s work and striving to accomplish God’s purposes. Any effort which is not based on a reliance on God’s work is vain and futile. Yet at the same time, we must not sit back complacently because of what God has already accomplished by creation and redemption. We must diligently labor while placing our confidence in God’s power working in and through us to accomplish the task before us.
Dear Father, lead us to work faithfully in prayer and in evangelizing the unreached, and to rest in the confidence that You will complete Your work.
People watched from the Tokyo sidewalk as police raided the “dating bar,” but few could understand what the women were saying. The women being handcuffed and dragged into the paddy wagon spoke Thai instead of Japanese. The bystanders weren’t surprised; there had been plenty of rumors that the women working at the “dating bar” were in fact prostitutes.
Women desperate for work in Thailand are easy targets for recruiters. They are told that they will be bar maids, but these bars are actually fronts for prostitution rings. Once in Japan, these women are forced to pay outrageous transportation fees. To pay off these debts, they are forced to work as prostitutes. These operations are controlled by the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia. Girls who try to escape are beaten up.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God will raise up Christian counselors who will open halfway houses where Thai women rescued from sexual slavery can recover emotionally and hear the message of salvation. Ask God to break the power of the Yakuza and end the corruption that allows prostitution rings to operate in Japan. May God raise up community development workers to reach out in Thailand, ending the conditions that make Thai women easy targets for Japanese prostitution recruiters.-WK
