Throughout history, many pretenders have contended for the allegiance of men’s hearts. Nebuchadnezzar sought to command worship of his gods and his glory, but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to join the crowds in such idolatry. Likewise today the people of God are called to prophetically denounce idolatry in its many forms and point the nations to the one true God. Yahweh will not share His glory with another, and He longs for the people of the earth to turn from false gods.
Father, break our hearts with the tragedy of a world bound by the futile worship of idols. You alone are God!
Is anything too great for God? Can He reach from one continent to another to bring a missionary to an unreached people in a remote corner of Africa? The Songhai children who kick a soccer ball in Timbuktu, Mali with a Brazilian missionary named Roberto Gomes know that God can do that. Soccer has opened a door in the faith barrier and a community and its children are pouring through.
Missionaries of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptists (IMB) rejoice in the enthusiasm the under-25 age group has shown to join soccer leagues formed by Roberto, since this age group comprises 70 percent of the population. Isn’t God great to plant a love for soccer and a love for Him in the heart of a Brazilian man who left his homeland and moved his family across the ocean just to save Songhai people?Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for this move of God in Mali, that through sports and friendship, trust may be born and the gospel of Jesus Christ might come in like a flood in this spiritually parched and thirsty land. Pray for health, protection and favor with the local people as the missionaries reach out in love. And pray that souls will be won and that every Songhai person will be reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ.-PE
