Author Don Richardson has employed the phrase “eternity in their hearts” as the title of his thrilling account of God’s redemptive activity among the peoples of the earth. Richardson has discovered evidence of the knowledge of the One True Creator God in the ancient stories and legends of people groups from every continent on earth. Yet these stories, and the yearnings for eternal truth they express, are not sufficient to lead men and women to saving faith in Jesus Christ. “How can they hear without a preacher?” Paul asks. “And how can they preach except they be sent?”
Lord, sharpen our perspective of eternity, so we might faithfully build on Your testimony among the nations.
The snare snapped; the Pygmy woman jumped upon the little antelope and beat it to death. There would be meat at dinner tonight. And that’s the problem. Pygmies are at odds with an increasingly agrarian and mechanized Africa. They want to preserve their bush game from extinction while exploiting timber by felling forest trees. Indeed, many of their taller, darker Bantu neighbors look down on these forest dwellers as less than human. The more populous Bantu peoples are crowding out the Pygmies from their traditional homeland forests.
Traditionally the Pygmies have been hunter-gatherers. Though some still are, others are forest tour guides, day laborers, students, soccer enthusiasts, horticulturalists, honey gathers, chicken and fish farmers, herbalists, and conservationists. Others are marginalized, alcoholics, illiterate, and poor. All are fighting an uphill battle against deculturalization and “progress.”
Traditionally they are Animists, worshipping the spirit of the forest, rather than the forest’s Creator, whom they believe abandoned them long ago. Yet about 10 percent are nominally Christian, without Scripture in their language. They can not read God’s Word.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God, who has not abandoned them, will prepare them for the message of Jesus, so that when He returns, they will recognize him as Lord. Pray for more missionaries to learn their language and culture, to be sensitive, loving witnesses who will gain Pygmies’ trust. Pray for the Bible and the JESUS Film to be translated into their languages. Pray that churches will adopt the Baka and other Pygmy peoples.-TP
