Ps. 98:2, 4
"The Lord has made His salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations.... Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth"

The psalmist was deeply aware that God’s redemptive acts on Israel’s behalf were also played out on a stage before the nations. Israel, called to be a kingdom of priests, had the privilege and responsibility of interpreting these acts to the surrounding peoples. We who have come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord have the same privilege and responsibility, made greater by our knowledge of the completeness of Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. What a delight to declare His acts to the nations so that they may respond with joy to their Master!

Father, open our lips to tell others of Your salvation and righteousness.

Afar People of Ethiopia

“What do you want to do when you grow up?” the Afar boy asked his sister. She laughed and answered, “I’m 12. Soon I will marry and be a mother. What do you want to do when you are older?” The little boy stood up, raised his fist and shouted, “I want to kill Issas!”

Afar men are warriors, constantly fighting with the Issas and other neighboring tribes. When a man has killed at least 10 men, he has the prestige of wearing a special iron bracelet. The Afar’s semi-nomadic lifestyle is rugged as they travel over the most inhospitable desert in the world to find water and food for their livestock. Many Afar people suffer from malnutrition and the diseases it causes. Water is at a premium, and livestock is so vital to their existence that often animals get water ahead of people.

Folk Islam is a real part of their lives, and they still practice painful female “circumcision.” They greatly fear spirits of the dead. Although the New Testament is available in the Afar language, most people are unable to read it. Radio and the JESUS Film are most effective in this oral culture.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will prepare Afar hearts and the Lord will send forth His Word with power. Pray for the Afar people to value eternal life rather than the taking of human lives here on earth.-AK
