Although the missionary “Word” of God occupies a central position in the Christmas story, the missionary “Spirit” of God is at work as well. Just as the Spirit worked to bring the Word into the world, so that same Spirit later worked to reveal the Word to the representative nations gathered in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. Like a mighty wind the Spirit calls forth and accompanies those who will take His Word to each of the unreached peoples of the earth.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us! Fill us with power, and stir us to action!
The Zaramos’ history goes back to the first millennium AD. Caravans of slaves and traders passed through Zaramo territory in the 18th century, bringing Islam with them. In the last 20 years, many Zaramo communities have settled in Tanzania’s capital city, Dar es Salaam, in search of work. In total, they number about 600,000. The Zaramo people produce a large part of the fruit and vegetables that wind up in the markets of Dar es Salaam. They also raise the crop sisal, which is used in the manufacture of rope.
Ninety-eight percent of the Zaramos observe traditional Muslim practices, but have also mingled Islam with traditional animistic beliefs rooted in superstition and ancestor worship. Each family is responsible to venerate their ancestors who intercede to Mulungu, their supreme being. They also sacrifice to a spirit called Kolelo for good crops and health.
Zaramo marriages are typically polygamous, with the family names being passed down through the mother. The children always belong to the clan of their mother. Because of the high prestige given to girls, the Zaramo people have great celebrations when a baby girl is born. Divorce is also very common.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for a spiritual breakthrough among the Zaramo population. Pray for creative ways to reach the Zaramo people. Pray that Christian radio broadcasts and the JESUS Film will become available to them. Pray that the Lord will show Himself strong to them, and they will turn their allegiance to Him.-JR
