Josh. 7:1
"But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things"

Less familiar than the great victory at Jericho is the disastrous defeat at Ai. One of Israel’s warriors, Achan, had coveted and taken some of the beautiful things from the spoils of Jericho which God had reserved for Himself. As a result, the nation of Israel suffered a devastating defeat at the little town of Ai. Every soldier of the cross of Jesus Christ today must guard against the same type of covetousness and greed. It is easy, like Achan, to justify our greed and forget God’s command. Jesus said, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15).

O Lord, guard our hearts. So fill us with Your purposes, Your goals, Your concern for lost peoples, that other things will take their rightful place in our affections.

Reaching Russian-speaking Central Asians

There’s no doubt about it-the Russians have had a tremendous influence on the peoples of Central Asia. Six of the Soviet Socialist Republics were Muslim Central Asian countries.

Since the demise of the USSR in 1991, these nations have been attempting to find their identity in their traditional cultures. For that reason, many Christian ministries have been trying to get materials to these Central Asian peoples in their mother tongue.

But there are many people in this part of the world that only speak Russian! Through the years, these Russified Central Asian Muslims have been taught at Russian-language schools, and used Russian as a trade language. Of the 68 million Muslims in the former USSR, is it estimated that at least 26 million need to be reached in Russian.

Fortunately, there are ministries trying to reach them for Christ. The Eastern Russian Scriptures Project, run by People International (GoPeople.org) is producing Bibles and Christian literature for these people in the Russian language. The covers, text and footnotes are designed to have a Central Asian flavor even though the text is in Russian.

There is also a large satellite Christian television ministry called New Life Channel (CNL) reaching all over Central Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East in the Russian language.

Pray that the Lord will use these two Russian-language ministries to reach the hearts of Central Asian Muslims.-KC
