This passage is very instructive. God is not “for” one people or “against” another. He is only “for” His purposes among all the peoples of the earth. The story is told of a lady who asked American President Lincoln during the Civil War, “Do you think God is on your side?” The great president wisely answered, “The question is not if God is on my side, but if I am on God’s side.”
Father, forgive us for our habitual self-centeredness. Help us to see the peoples and nations of the earth from Your perspective - as peoples who desperately need to hear and to receive the gospel.
Swirling, hypnotic music, drums and tambourines escalating in tempo and volume bring youthful Shi’ite Muslims in Iran to their feet to sway and raise their hands in ecstatic dance. “It’s free, it’s like flying! It feels like we leave our bodies. We shed the shackles of strict forms. It’s relaxing and we are searching for love and union with Allah.” Other Shi’ite youth proclaim their affinity with Sufism to meet their need for belonging, company and entertainment.
Sufism is a form of mystic Islam that is sweeping Iran. While the government proclaims complete freedom for the Sufis, there have been incidents such as burning of Sufi meeting houses and violent clashes between Sufis and traditional Shi’ite Muslims. Government officials have been quoted as saying they believe the Sufis have ties to foreign countries trying to create insecutity in Iran, and they are afraid that the Sufis will do something against them.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for the searching youth, chafed by authoritarian regime and searching for answers in alternative sectors of Islam. Ask the Lord to protect them from retaliation as He looses the gospel to show them the true freedom, love and salvation for which they are searching. Pray for Christian broadcasts, dreams, visions, and revelations of Jesus Christ in the midst of the counterfeit alternative to truth. Pray that they will recognize the truth and that the truth will set them free as the Holy Spirit opens their spiritual eyes to Jesus.-PE
