Time and time again, the Lord makes it abundantly clear that He is the God of all creation, and that He desires for all peoples to come to the knowledge of Him. God had a missionary mandate for the nation of Israel, but they most often neglected that responsibility, choosing instead the path of selfishness and sin. They were supposed to spread the Good News of God’s love and redemption through the coming Messiah throughout “all the earth.” The same is true for God’s people today! God wants His glory to be spread to all nations!
Father, You have shown us Your glory many times. We pray that You will use us to manifest it to all the peoples of the earth.
“The majority of Tamil speaking people in Sri Lanka base their identity on their language. As Muslims we must maintain our identity based on our Islamic religion even though we speak Tamil. The Hindu Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) attacks us daily so we will be forced to replace our Islamic with the Tamil identity. This cannot happen. We are first and foremost Muslim. Tamil is only our language.” Ahmad was concluding his article, which was to be published in a national magazine.
South India and Sri Lanka have been the primary home for the majority of Tamil Muslims. Sunni Islam came to these people from Arab merchants and sailors who settled in their regions and married Tamil women. As a people, they are recognized as hard working, shrewd shopkeepers and faithful to their religious beliefs. Those living in rural areas have been influenced by the Islamic mystic practices of Sufism.
Sri Lankan Tamil Muslims are very resistant to any outreach or approaches from other religious groups. In India, most Tamil Muslims live in the region of Tamil Nadu where they have maintained harmony with their Hindu neighbors, though they would not welcome efforts to change their religion.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
