Gen. 12:1-3
"The Lord had said to Abram, 'Leave your country.... I will bless you...and you will be a blessing...and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.'"

Chapters 1 through 11 of Genesis have set the stage for a watershed event in chapter 12. Indeed, God’s commissioning of Abram sets the stage for the rest of the Scriptures! The golden thread that runs through the entire Bible and through all of history is God’s call to Abram and his descendants to be stewards of God’s resources (“I will bless you”) in order to accomplish a specific responsibility (bless all peoples). Just as God outlined His plan for Abram and his family, so He calls us today to a commitment to that same plan and purpose.

Lord, move us now to extend these blessings to other peoples.

Gujar People of India

“Cover the baby’s face to protect him against the evil eye,” a Gujar mother said to her daughter. The Gujar people watch over their children closely and often burn incense to keep away evil spirits. When boys turn five, they go through a rite of circumcision and their heads are shaved. Their families sacrifice animals during the ritual. Most Gujars in India are Hindu, while most Gujars in Pakistan and other countries are Muslim. Originally, they were all Hindus; but in the 11th century, Muslim invaders converted many Gujars to their faith. During the partitioning of Pakistan and India in 1947, masses of Gujar Muslims moved to Pakistan, while Hindus moved to India. Many Gujars have both the Muslim Koran and Hindu family idols in their homes.

Over 500,000 Gujar buffalo herders live in northwest India. They never slaughter the buffalo, but they sell milk and other dairy products. Middlemen often exploit the Gujars, so they are usually in debt. There are frequent conflicts between farmers, sheepherders and buffalo herders since one buffalo requires as much pasture as four sheep.

Pray that Christians will make long-term commitments to evangelize and disciple the Gujar people. Ask God to strengthen the few believers and build robust churches in Gujar villages.-AK
